A faucet cartridge is a removable valve unit inside many modern faucets. When you lift, turn, or rotate the handle, the cartridge opens and closes water passages. In a mixer faucet, it also changes the amount of hot and cold water entering the spout.
The cartridge works with the valve body, seals, handle, and spout. That is why a drip is not always a cartridge problem. A worn O-ring, damaged seat, or blocked aerator can create similar signs.
The words cartridge, stem, ball assembly, and valve are often mixed together. A cartridge is usually a self-contained replaceable unit. A compression stem pushes a washer against a seat. Hard water deserves special attention. It contains dissolved calcium and magnesium that can leave scale as water heats or dries.

OEM parts usually give the lowest compatibility risk. They suit concealed shower valves, thermostatic controls, warranty repairs, and labor-heavy jobs.
